Tuesday May 10, 2016 - Debriefed regarding the national exam.  Examined carefully the 2016  Short Answer questions, Document Based Question, and the Free Response Questions. Conducted the Hall of Fame candidates lottery. Assignment: Continue to work on preparing your slide presentation for the Hall of Fame Project. 

Friday May 6, 2016 - NATIONAL EXAM - Assignment: Research a list of potential nominees that you would like to promote for the APUSH Hall of Fame. Bring at least 4 or 5 candidates to our next class meeting. It would be very wise to read through the project requirements and the list of those already inducted.  APUSH Hall of Fame Assignment

Wednesday May 4, 2016 - Vocabulary Work, Reviewed main ideas from 1980 to the present. Completed approximately 25 questions in the Newman practice exam. Assignment: Review for Friday's big event.

Monday May 2, 2016 - Practice Exam. Worked on Quizlet cards for Chapter 30 in Newman.  Assignment: Use the 2016 APUSH Review Site to improve your weaknesses.

Thursday April 28, 2016 - Covered key vocabulary from Chapter 29 in Newman. Answered multiple choice and short answer questions 642-644.  Assignment: 1- complete a set of Quizlet cards with vocabulary from Chapter 30 in Newman. 2- read as carefully as possible Chapter 30 in Newman.  It may be wise to run through the materials at:  2016 APUSH Review Site.

Tuesday April 26, 2016 - Mr. Saygers visited and progressed through the pre-test bureaucracy. Examined main themes 1 and 2 for the 1970's under Richard Nixon. Reading period. Assignment: Gather notes for Chapter 29 in Newman as to how they relate to the main theme questions.

Monday April 18, 2016 - Presidential Review 1789-1963. Reviewed wars, financial crises, and Gilded Age presidencies.  Worked on the Vietnam war goals and objectives. Introduced key vocabulary for the Vietnam conflict. Assignment: Continue to read and re-read chapter 38 in Kennedy.

Thursday April 14, 2016 - Reviewed the College Board Examination construction, testing procedure, and some released sample questions. Cleaned up When America was Rocked written work. Assignment: Prepare items for week 29 on the syllabus.

Tuesday April 12, 2016 - Quizlet Live reviews of Colonial America and World War 2 vocabulary. When America was Rocked video and questions. Assignment: Continue to study items from the syllabus for week 28.  Most likely a quiz will appear next class meeting.

Friday April 8, 2016 - Current events discussion. Extensive questions about the Truman Doctrine, containment.  Worked on analyzing historical graphs and tables. Assignment: Prepare all materials on the syllabus for week 28.   Begin to review for the national exam everyday for at least 45 minutes to an hour. Here are some places to begin to review.

Wednesday April 6, 2016 - Quizlet work on Truman Administration Vocabulary. Clarified any problems with concepts associated with the Truman Administration.  Assignment: Study carefully the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan. Come prepared to share your knowledge.  (hint hint)

Monday April 4, 2016 - Test over U.S. foreign policy 1920-1940 and World War 2.  Worked on Newman chapter 26 vocabulary Quizlets.  Assignment: Complete all preparations for Week 27 on the syllabus.  You should also link your finished Quizlet to the class table.


Spring Break March 25 - April 3


Wednesday March 23, 2016 - Open question period over World War 2 topics. Studied Foreign Policy 1920-1945 Quizlet. Assessed Jennifer Burns podcast content.  Examined details surrounding the organization of how the home front contributed to the war effort.  Assignment: Prepare an answer to the 1988 DBQ for next class.  You should also prepare for a test on Chapters 34 and 35 in Kennedy along with chapter 25 in Newman.

Monday March 21, 2016 - Passed back test from 1920's and 30's.  Reviewed In-depth the Court Packing Issue. Built a Quizlet using the remaining terms in Newman. Reviewed the path to war and the outbreak of the war in Europe. Assignment: Continue to study the United States in World War 2.  Listen carefully to the Jennifer Burns Podcast on World War 2.  

Thursday March 17, 2016 - Vocabulary work over items associated with Chapter 34 in Kennedy.  Vocabulary Quiz. Open discussion about the readings. Assignment: Read carefully Chapter 35 in Kennedy.  Watch any associated videos on YouTube that match the reading in Kennedy.  Prepare thesis statements only for the Main Theme (MT) questions that appear on the syllabus.

Tuesday March 15, 2016 - Test over 1920's and Great Depression. (Ch. 31-32-33).  Assignment: Create a quizlet dealing with only the vocabulary terms on p. 541 in Newman.  Use ONLY the terms in the first column and the first section of the second column on page 541.   Read carefully Chapter 34 in Kennedy. There will be a quiz during the next class meeting.

Friday March 11, 2016 - Lecture Recitation Evaluation of FDR's New Deal. Categorized New Deal Agencies as Relief, Recovery, and/or Reform.  Assignment: Test over 1920's and the Great Depression.

Wednesday March 9, 2016 - Opened with discussion of the Hamby Article from the Oates Reader.  Video clip on the 1930s and social history of the period.   Assignment: Complete watching the video clip from the 13:00 mark. Complete this table, and share with me along with the ability to comment.

Monday March 7, 2016 - Open question period over FDR's response to the Great Depression.  Silent Reading of FDR and the New Deal: The Foundation of a New Political Tradition - Oates Vol. 2 pp. 211-230. Guest Speaker - Jacob Carlen.  Assignment: Complete the reading in the Oates reader. Continue to study chapter 33 from Kennedy and chapter 24 in Newman.

Thursday March 3, 2016 - Open class discussion over the Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover administrations. Completed group questions. Wrote team responses.  Began work on how to analyze a photograph using pictures from the Great Depression. Assignment: Prepare Chapter 33 from Kennedy "The Great Depression and The New Deal" for next class.   There will be a quiz next class over the reading.

Tuesday March 1, 2016 - Completed school climate survey.  Read in current news about Super Tuesday and the 2016 Presidential Election Season. Took a quiz over Chapter 32 in Kennedy. Assignment: Research the answer to your group question.  Answer in the document. Find and be able to access (in class) five photographs from the Great Depression.  The National Archives are an excellent place to find the photos.

Friday February 26, 2016 - Open question period over the Burns lecture. Written summary of the Harlem Renaissance along with two specific examples of contributors. Roaring Twenties Quizlet. Ken Burns Jazz, Jazz Music.   Assignment: Read carefully chapter 32 in Kennedy. There will be a quiz over people places and concepts during our next class meeting.

Thursday February 11, 2016 - Open question period. Soo Locks/Panama Canal. Comparison of Wilson's Progressivism to Roosevelt's Progressivism. Sought evidence of progressive era reforms on the federal and local levels. Mindmapped Main theme question #1 from the syllabus. Broke into groups and compared/contrasted Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson's brands of Progressive Policy.  Assignment: Prepare week 21 from Newman for Next class.  If per chance that we only meet 1 day next week (2/16-2/20) we will still be testing over Weeks 19, 20, and 21 from the syllabus the day that we do meet.   Be prepared.

Tuesday February 9, 2016 - Warm Up with terms from Chapter 28. Progressive Era Quizlet.  The American Experience: America 1900 (looking for signs of progressivism - 30 min.) Notes over meaning of progressivism, leaders of progressivism and what each sector was seeking. Assignment: Review Progressive Era Quizlet. Review Presidents of the U.S. Washington through Woodrow Wilson. Continue to study carefully the material in chapter 29.  Test will be the first day back from extended weekend.

Thursday February 4, 2016 - Open question period about Lodge Corollary, DeLome Letter, Dole take over of Hawaii, and other key vocabulary/concepts associated with imperialism. Map work on Spanish-American War and the U.S. becoming a world power. Assignment: Carefully prepare the Progressive Era materials in chapter 28 and 29 for next week.  It would be extremely wise to be up on the Presidents through Woodrow Wilson.  Name, year elected, and political party.   HINT HINT.

Tuesday February 2, 2016 - Mr. Saygers spoke to class about the upcoming AP exam. Stated plainly that the deadline for turning in test fee was March. 18.  Mr. Cox made a deal that all students who turned in their registration by March 1, 2016 would earn a 5% bonus on the first test after 3/1/16. If 100% of the class had turned in their fees, an additional 2% would be added.   Took open questions about the week's reading topics. Attempted to begin  Mapping History - Alaska and Hawaii and Toward Empire: Overseas Expansion 1865-1910 . Assignment: Continue to read and study the material in Chapter 27 of Kennedy.  It may be wise to study some key Vocabulary in Chapter 27 with this Quizlet.

Friday January 29, 2016 - Test Chapters 23-26. Assignment: Prepare chapter 27 from Kennedy and Review Mapping History - Alaska and Hawaii and Toward Empire: Overseas Expansion 1865-1910

Wednesday January 27, 2016 - Reviewed all aspects of the Gilded Age. Reviewed populism, addressed any specific questions about presidential administrations from Grant through McKinley.  Explained bi-metalism.  Assignment: Prepare for test over material in chapters 23-26 in the Kennedy text for next class meeting.

Thursday January 21, 2016 - Open question period over any concept, person, place, or term in chapters 24 and 25.  Daily Agenda for January 21, 2016. Assignment: Prepare week 18 on the syllabus, Chapter 23 in Kennedy and 19 in Newman. It may be wise to preview the YouTube videos that correlate to Chapter 23.  It may also be wise to utilize quizlet for chapter 23.  

Tuesday January 19, 2016 - Covered details of the Oates Reading. Mr. Saygers came and spoke on Buckeye Boys  and Buckeye Girls State summer opportunities. Examined the historical background on Industrialization in U.S. History.  Assignment: Continue to study diligently chapters 24 and 25 in American Pageant.  There will be a vocabulary quiz next class.

Read through Chapter 26 online notes, Watched Adam Norris Clip on Chapter 26. Watched excerpt on the Carlisle Indian School from Into the West. Assignment: True/False Check Up questions in section A. Chapter 26 quiz.

Monday January 4, 2016 - Previewed and read in the Oates Reader: pp. 43-52 "Women First Won the Right to Vote in the American West"Small group work on the reading questions. Examined the 1999 #3 question and discovered that we as a group did not understand what the prompt was seeking. We began a brief discussion on how to attack such a question. Assignment: Re-work the thesis for the 1999 question. Make certain to re-read and study Chapter 26 in Kennedy.


Winter Break December 19, 2015 - January 3, 2016


Wednesday December 16, 2015 - First Semester Exam.  Assignment: Prepare Week 15 on the class syllabus.  When you arrive in class the first day back from Winter Break you should have in your possession a thesis addressing: "How were the lives of the Plains Indians in second half of the 19th century affected by technological developments and government actions?"   There are no required My Big Campus postings between December 17 and January 6.  You may however complete 2 posts in a single Wednesday to Wednesday cycle over break to replace a week where you did not post or to replace a posting requirement for January 7 through 13.

Monday December 14, 2015 - Completed our study of Reconstruction. Reviewed Quizlet Reconstruction Vocabulary (Quiz). Mountain Group Study Groups for Exam with AP U.S. History In A Box. Assignment: Prepare for semester exam that is scheduled for Wednesday Dec. 16.

Thursday December 10, 2015 - Lincoln Assassination, Surrender at Appomattox C.H., Close examination of the Radical Republicans, Comparison of the various plans for Reconstruction. Reconstruction video clipAssignment: Continue to review for upcoming semester exam.  

Tuesday December 8, 2015 - [ 2 hour delay due to fog ] - practiced grading 2009B DBQ. Concluded with very quick quizlet review of Jacksonian America. Assignment: Prepare for work on Reconstruction. Chapter 22 in Kennedy.

Friday December 4, 2015 - Exam discussion, Worked almost exclusively on 2009 (B) DBQ. Assignment: Write the 2009 (B) DBQ essay as per directions given in class. Prepare materials listed for week 14 on the syllabus.

Wednesday December 2, 2015 - This Day in Civil War History. Pre-Assessment Thesis Work. Assignment: Continue to read and study the materials listed for week 13.

Thursday November 19, 2015 - Ken Burns Civil War Part I completed. Assignment: Prepare for a test next class. The parameters of the test are consistent with week 12 on the syllabus.

Tuesday November 17, 2015 - Ken Burns Civil War Part I. Assignment: Continue to carefully study the 1850's as a prelude to the Civil War. There is no need to bring your text to class on Thursday as we will be finishing the Ken Burns episode.  The next test will be moved to next week.

Friday November 13, 2015 - Presidents and Territorial Acquisitions quiz, Territorial round table with "W" questions. Manifest destiny check up questions for extra credit.  Manifest destiny flash cards. Assignment: Prepare Week 12 on the syllabus should be ready to go.

Wednesday November 11, 2015 - Veterans Day commemoration: Read about the history of the day, visited the World War I Memorial for the four Rossford residents to give their lives in the war.  Concluded with brief reading on World War topics.  Reviewed Manifest Destiny, California Gold Rush, and watched a clip on the Gadsden Purchase.  Assignment: Prepare for a quiz on the first 13 Presidents and topics related to Chapters 11 and 17.  

Monday November 9, 2015 - 20 minute quick write on demographic groups that went west. Broke down the material in Chapter 14 of Kennedy. Assignment: If you haven't watched episode #3 of Ken Burns' The West it would be very wise to do so.  Continue to examine Manifest Destiny of Chapter 17, specifically the Texas Annexation, The Oregon Country, The Mexican War, and of course the California Gold Rush.  You should now know the first 13 Presidents in order along with the year they were elected or if they got the office due to the death of the President (example: John Tyler -1841 due to the death of William Henry Harrison.)  Be prepared to show your knowledge........

Tuesday November 3, 2015 - Cleaned up any last minute questions about the Americanism test and the test on Jacksonian America 1824-1860.  Test over Unit #3.  Assignment: Watch both of the following:  Ken Burns The West: Episode 2 Empire Upon the Trails, and Episode 3 Speck of the Future.  Prepare Week 11 on the syllabus for our next class.

Wednesday October 28, 2015 - Warm up with quizlet questions. Presentations over Reform Era. Lyman Beecher, Fr. Theobald Mathew, Neal Dow, Dorthea Dix, William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, Theodore Weld, Sarah and Angelina Grimke, Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Elijah Lovejoy. Assignment: Complete your understanding the Jacksonian American society 1820-1840 by studying week 10 on the syllabus.

Monday October 26, 2015 - Warm Up with four terms from the reading assignment, Video Clip over Reform Movement and Purifying America Assignment. Assignment: Complete the Purifying America assignment and be prepared for a two to three minute presentation to the class on your reformer.  Also remember that the unit 3 test will be this Friday.   Be ready!!!


Week 10

Thursday October 22, 2015 - Current Events (NPR), Primary Document Work on Andrew Jackson, Newman text work pp. 201-203 and Think As a Historian.  Assignment: Prepare for Jackson writing exercise next class along with preparing week 10 on the syllabus. **Take a photo of yourself (with classmates if you would like) outside enjoying the leaves this weekend. Post your photo on your MY BIG CAMPUS wall for 5% bonus on the next in-class quiz.**

Tuesday October 20, 2015 - Reviewed Unit 2 test results and made some general statements about areas needed to improve scores. Small group Kahoots to review vocabulary from Chapter 9. Looked at hub dates 1800 and 1824. Open question session on Jackson and specifically the BUS and Panic of 1837.  Assignment: Continue to read and study Newman Chapter 10 and Chapter 13 in Kennedy.  You will have a quiz over the items in those chapters next class.


Week 9

Friday October 16, 2015 - Wrote a 50 (thesis) sentence addressing "What is Sectionalism". Built Kahoots for vocabulary work in Chapter 9 of Newman. Google Doc. Assignment: Continue to read and complete the items for week 9 on the syllabus.  Must have your Kahoot available to other classmates by noon on Saturday Oct. 17, 2015.

Wednesday October 14, 2015 - PSAT given to approximately 50% of the class. So...  we discussed My Big Campus posts, took a quiz over the first seven presidents, and watched the beginning of Andrew Jackson: Good Evil, and the Presidency. The group watched up to 22:57.   Assignment: Complete watching the Jackson video.

Friday October 9, 2015 - Test over Unit 2 (1789-1820) Assignment: Prepare week 8 on the syllabus. You should have great knowledge about the Presidential election of 1824.  It may also be wise to examine Andrew Jackson and know some background information on him.

Wednesday October 7, 2015 - Warm up paragraphs for grade. In depth look at the Madison Administration, the War of 1812, the Foreign Policy 1810-1824. Assignment: Prepare for test over chapters 6-8 in Newman and chapters 10-12 in Kennedy. Test next class.

Monday October 5, 2015 - Warm Up paragraphs. Video clip on James Madison and one on the effects of the Embargo of 1807 and the Non-Intercourse Act. Assignment: Read  The Personal Side of a Developing People . Continue to read and review materials listed on the syllabus for week 7.  The second major test of the year will be Friday Oct. 9.


Week 7

Thursday October 1, 2015 - Intensive discussion on Jeffersonian America. Specifically looked at Revolution of 1800, Jefferson's diversion from strict constructionism, cleaned up any loose ends with John Adams (XYZ Affair and Alien/Sedition Acts). Assignment: Prepare week 7 on the syllabus, specifically Kennedy chapter 12 and Newman chapter 8.

Friday September 25, 2015 - Open question period. Watched George Washington inauguration clip, listened and read Washington's inaugural address.  Watched clips of John Adams meeting the kings of France and England as a diplomat.  Assigned short answer questions pp. 120-122 and Think As a Historian p. 125 to be emailed to ccox@rossfordschools.org by midnight Sunday.  Assignment: Prepare for week six on the syllabus.  You may also begin watching the videos that are linked on the front page of the class web page.

Wednesday Sept. 23, 2015 - Open question period. Hamilton - Jefferson - Adams discussion video clip. Read through Newman chapter 6.   Answered specific comprehension questions.  Shared Presidential Listing with Major Events. Assignment: Prepare for a quiz over the establishment of the Constitution, Washington Administration and the Adams Administration. for next class.

Monday Sept. 21, 2015 - Geography Warm Up, Read first sections of Chapter 10 in Kennedy, Color Group Work on 10 multiple choice and 4 free response questions.  Passed back Unit 1 test and commented on strengths and weaknesses. Assignment: Continue to study chapter 10 in Kennedy and chapter 6 in Newman.
