Friday Mar. 13 - Extensive discussion about current events.  Orientation as to how we will proceed sharing information over the next three to four weeks.  Open question session over the Great Depression and the New Deal. Completed a "Quick Write" summary of Jennifer Burns lecture #22. Reviewed key vocabulary related to the Great Depression and New Deal. Finished class with several rounds of quizlet live.  Assignment: On Monday morning, check the main class web page for your assignments next week.  At minimum begin reading carefully and take notes over chapter 25: Diplomacy and World War II in the Newman text.

Wednesday Mar. 11 - NPR News Audio. Quick Write over Great Depression and New Deal. Open question period. Assignment: Listen carefully to and take handwritten notes over Jennifer Burns lecture #22.

Please begin reviewing materials from earlier course work in order to prepare for the national exam.

Wednesday Feb. 26 - World War I overview part 2Assignment: Be prepared to answer a few questions based on the overviews, quizlet stack and the reading in Chapter 22 in Newman.  You should spend a good amount of time on the last six cards from this stack.

Monday Feb. 24 - World War I overview with Adam Norris video #47World War I background and conduct of the War in Europe. Discussion about Pershing and the War on the American Home front. Assignment: Study diligently WW1 Quizlet stack.  It would also be wise to re-read Chapter 22 in Newman.  (hint hint).

Thursday Feb. 20 - Completed multiple choice questions pp. 449-451 in Newman. Graded 2003 DBQ Document SOAPS and Lecture notes on the 1912 Election. Completed vocabulary check up quiz in Quizlet over Progressive Era. Began studying World War 1 and Its Aftermath by working on Concepts for week 22.  Learned about Cartograms. Assignment: Complete concepts for World War 1 with our adjustment to adding a vocabulary list at the end of your concept answer.  Read incredibly carefully chapter 22 in the Newman text.

Wednesday Feb. 19 - Open question session. Broke down Theodore Roosevelt's Square Deal and compared the progressive programs of Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson. Compared populism and progressivism. Assignment: Have notes from Jennifer Burns' Election of 1912 lecture, SOAPed documents D through J from the 2003 DBQ completed, and have a sound understanding of the Progressive Era Quizlet stack prior to coming to our next class meeting.

Thursday Feb. 13 - Defined progressivism. Examined Woodrow Wilson's record as a progressive. Briefly examined Theodore Roosevelt's record as a progressive. Learned or possibly relearned how to SOAP documents. Worked briefly on 2003 Form B Document based question on the effectiveness of the national government in being progressive. Assignment: SOAP documents D through J from the 2003 DBQ. Study the terms from the Progressive Era Stack. Be prepared to share your knowledge on the effectiveness of the national government in regard to progressivism. If you have not completed your concept questions, please do so by Sunday Feb. 16.

Wednesday Feb. 12 - Mr. Saygers visited and spoke about Buckeye Boys State, college visits, ACT opportunities. Graded Burns lecture notes on Progressivism, and Concept 1 of the Concept Questions for the Progressive Era. Assignment: Complete Concepts #2 and #3.  Burns' Lecture notes on the Election of 1912 will be graded next class meeting.  Remember that you can view the Dr. Burns slide shows through this link.

Friday January 31 - Worked on Gilded Age politics and political cartoons. Discussed the Wizard of Oz allegory in relation to populist movement. Assignment: Read carefully chapter 20 Becoming World Power in Newman.   There are no concept questions for chapter 20.  Create formal outline notes for Chapter 20.  This is a fairly short chapter. Please read it carefully and be prepared to answer some questions specifically about Alaska acquisition and International Darwinism (pp. 410-412)

Wednesday January 29 - Brief open question period. Completed a vocabulary quiz.  Graded Jennifer Burns notes.  Assignment: Listen to and take handwritten notes on Gilded Age Politics.  These notes will be checked next class meeting.

Tuesday January 28 - Spent significant time analyzing the Election of 1876. Discussed definition of Gilded Age. Listed presidents of the gilded age. Broke down question one of the concepts, specifically analyzing the Compromise of 1877. Analyzed how removing the troops from the south changed everything (political, economic, social) for people of color. Briefly addressed questions 2 and 3 on Week 18 concepts. Assignment: Continue to study Chapter 19 in Newman and prepare for a simple vocabulary quiz based on Chapter 19 in Newman.


End of 1st Semester and 2nd Quarter


Friday January 24 - Quizzed over urbanization. Discussed muckrakers, listed the political, economic, and social impacts of urbanization with specific evidence to support each topic. Walked through push/pull factors of urbanization. Assignment: Complete Week 18 Concepts. Read carefully chapter 19 in Newman and complete handwritten notes by the start of class on Wednesday on Jennifer Burns' lecture #12: Social Thought in the Gilded Age.

Wednesday January 22 - Completed small group work and regrouped to check answers with other groups.  Assignment: Be certain to read carefully pp. 363-372 in the Newman text.  There will be a quiz over this reading next class meeting.

Tuesday January 21 - Open question period.  Reviewed concepts for week 17. Began working on How the Other Half Lives photographs and reading excerpts.  Small Group work on How the Other Half Lives. Assignment: Work on Questions for How the Other Half Lives Quizlet Stack, and Vocabulary for Growth of Cities and American Culture Vocabulary Stack.

Thursday January 16 - Tested over New South/Last West/Industrialization. Assignment: Complete concepts for Week 17 on the Growth of Cities and American Culture. Complete all readings associated with week 17 on the syllabus except for the Kennedy reference.  You should also plan on working your way through "How the Other Half Lives." chapters 1-15-20-25. 

Wednesday January 15 - Warm Up Quiz over Presidents 1-10. Worked on Quizlet Vocabulary for Industrialization. Assignment: Prepare for a test next class period over New South/Last West/Industrialization.   The test will be primarily short answer questions along with free response questions.  There will be a significant vocabulary component on the test as well.

Monday January 13 - 15 minute open question period. Introduced Industrialization. Examined changes in industrial output between 1865 and 1900. Studied vocabulary related to Industrialization. Assignment: Complete Jennifer Burns lecture #6 along with notes. Study vocabulary related to Industrialization. Prepare for a vocabulary quiz over industrialization.

Thursday January 9 - Reviewed Reconstruction. Spent time examining political, economic, and social changes in the post Civil War South. Built a nice class list of those changes. Worked on breaking down prompts and specifically worked on "Explain".  Used Thesis Maker App 2 to build a thesis on : Explain the New South.  Used Thesis Maker 1 to Explain how the New South was still really the Old South. Assignment: Complete Concepts on Rise of Industrial America.  Do not forget that each concept must have a thesis statement. It is also incredibly wise to read and interact (write main ideas or highlight main ideas in Newman Chapter 16. 

Wednesday January 8 -  Completed a review of previous concepts from the period from 1789-1840. Assignment: Last call for Reconstruction and Last West/New South concepts.  You should also review key vocabulary from chapters 15 and 17 in Newman. (hint)

Tuesday January 7 2020 - Opening Day at the New Building.  Assignment: Must have Reconstruction and The Last West and The New South Concepts completed, shared, and linked by the beginning of next class.  Be certain to address the How and Why aspects of the concepts.

Thursday Dec. 19 - Open question period on Reconstruction. Graded Dr. Burns' lecture notes. Small group work on multiple choice questions from page 305 1-8. Examined the effect of Lincoln's assassination on Reconstruction. Reviewed key vocabulary associated with Reconstruction. Assignment:  Complete Concepts for Chapter 15 Reconstruction, and Chapter 16 The Last West and The New South.  Watch Episodes 4 & 5 of Into The West.  Think about the concepts from Chapter 16 while watching the videos.   Here are the listing to all episodes.  They are ALL well worth the time investment over break.

Wednesday Dec. 18 - Introduction to Reconstruction. I'm a Good Ol' Rebel.  2nd South Carolina String Band. Examined key issues (political, economic, and social) to be addressed by Reconstruction. Assignment: BRING NEWMAN TO OUR NEXT CLASS (no exceptions).

Monday Dec. 16 - Test over Manifest Destiny, Union in Peril, and Civil War. Assignment: Read Chapter 15 on Reconstruction from the Newman text.  Listen carefully to lecture #3 on the Reconstruction by Jennifer Burns.  Here is a link to the slide show presentation that Dr. Burns uses during her lecture on Reconstruction. Take notes while you listen to her lecture.  The notes will be graded at the start of class on Wednesday.

Thursday Dec. 12 - Analyzed American literature, music, and paintings from the first half of the 19th century. Specifically examined minstrel shows and Stephen Foster. Extensive work on the Civil War. Reviewed causes, impact on technology, social impact of the war on free blacks and women. Consumed the Gettysburg Address. Assignment: Test next class over chapters 12-13-14.

Wednesday Dec. 11 - Discussed the overall strategies of the Union and the Confederacy. Identified winners/losers of the Civil War. Monday Dec. 9 - Ken Burns Civil War. Worked on how to decode a map, and wandered through the opening sequences of the Civil War.  Briefly discussed Lincoln's first inaugural address. Assignment: Continue to build great answers to your Concepts for Week 13.  You must have decent knowledge of the Merrimac and the Monitor, along with the Battles of Antietam and Gettysburg for Wednesday's class.

Thursday Dec. 5 - Open question period over the Antebellum.  Much discussion about political parties, John Brown, and Lincoln as an abolitionist. Graded notes from 18 and 19. Worked on Vocabulary terms from the 1848-1861 period.  Watched a clip on John Brown, and a clip of Seccessionitis from the Ken Burns' Civil War. Assignment: Read carefully the materials on the syllabus for Week 13 (especially Newman). Concepts for Week 13 will be due Friday Dec. 13.

Wednesday Dec. 4 - Reviewed key events leading up to the Civil War. Covered concepts related to Week 12 with specific emphasis on discerning what the questions are seeking. Did some chronology work related to the antebellum period.  Assignment: Bring notes from 18 and 19 to be checked and be prepared for a quiz over materials relating to the Union In Peril 1848-1861 (week 12).

Monday Dec. 2 - Analyzed carefully the finer detailed points of the Compromise of 1850.  Focus question was "Who won the Compromise of 1850, the North or the South?"  Worked diligently on notes from 18 and 19.  Assignment: Complete handwritten notes for 18 and 19.  Complete all readings assigned as part of week 12 on the syllabus.  Be certain to have your concepts for week 12 in order.  PLEASE.... commit to consuming and understanding United States History.  PLEASE.

Thursday Nov. 7 - Open question on the Jacksonian period.  Specific topics covered included: 1824 election, 1828 election, two-party system, common man, Bank of the U.S., Peggy Eaton Affair, dueling, Henry Clay, Worchester v. Georgia, Cherokee Nation v. Georgia, and the Spoils System.  Assignment: Complete the Concepts of Society, Culture, and Reform 1820-1860. Complete all readings on the syllabus for week 10.  Kennedy is still not required.

Wednesday Oct. 23 - Open question period over chapters 6, 7, and 8 in Newman.  Specifically looked at Supreme Court cases decided by the Marshall court that strengthened nationalism over states' rights. Assignment: Test next class over chapters 6, 7, and 8 in Newman.

Tuesday Oct. 22 - Reviewed issues related to Week 6 concepts.  Spent a great deal of time in the Westward Settlement. examining migration patterns post 1800, and specific push pull factors drawing people to the trans-Appalachian area of North America.  Examined the impact of the steamboat, cotton gin, and the canal system (Erie Canal). Assignment: Begin preparation for the Unit 2 test.  Questions will only come from the Newman readings. The test is on Friday Oct. 25.

Friday Oct. 18 - Reviewed Concepts for week 6.  Political Cartoon analysis: Ograbme. Analysis of Jefferson's secret correspondence with Congress regarding the Lewis and Clark expedition. Analysis of the Jefferson presidency. Quick write quiz. Assignment: Week 7 Concepts.   Be certain to share only with ccox. Tuesday Oct. 15 - Reviewed the Washington and Adams Administrations.  Examined carefully the differences between Federalists and Democratic-Republicans. Broke down the Jay Treaty, Citizen Genet, XYZ Affair.  Spent time specifically reading questions three and four on pp. 125-126 in Newman. Briefly examined the duality of Thomas Jefferson. Assignment: Read carefully and be able to explain both arguments from The Louisiana Purchase - Two Views.  Be prepared for a quiz over materials listed under Week 6 on the syllabus.  Be certain to have completed Concepts for Week 6 .

Wednesday Oct. 9 - Open question period. Graded Newman questions. Examined attack strategies that are successful in time management. Discussed briefly Hamilton's Fiscal Policy, excise taxes, and the Whiskey Rebellion. Assignment: Quiz over materials related to Week 5 on the syllabus.

Monday Oct. 7 - Discussed test #1 results. Agreed on a compromise of completing additional questions which will be averaged with Test #1. Suspended readings in Kennedy.... to be resumed at a later date.  Broke down week 5 concepts and other items listed on the syllabus for week 5. Spent a good deal of time on the Preamble and Federalist 10 and Federalist 51. Compared Hamilton's vision of the future with Jefferson's vision of the future. Assignment: Read thoroughly Chapter 6 in Newman.  Complete the following questions from Newman pp. 15-16 #1-5, p. 43 #2 & #3, p. 61 #2,  p. 80  4&5&6, p. 98 4-5-6.

Open question period about the relationship of the colonists with the British tax collectors. Examined characteristics of American identity. Watched a clip on tarring and feathering. Assignment: Take these two online quizzes.  #1  - #2. Share a screen shot of your final scores and email it directly to ccox@rossfordschools.orgPrepare the readings for Week 4 on the syllabus.  Remember that we are having the first test of the year next Thursday.  Questions will be take from the materials from the first four weeks of the syllabus.  

I hope that you can find and watch episodes 1 and 2 of the 7 part HBO mini series entitled John Adams.   Here is the wikipedia entry for the series so that you know what you are seeking.  I know for certain that it is available through the Amazon Prime streaming service.  This mini-series is highly regarded amongst historians for its historical accuracy. I highly recommend you consuming it if at all possible.

Wed. Sept. 25 - Identification Warm Up. Open question period. Discussed the term "American".  Assignment: Generate a list of traits that defined this new (mid 18th century)  being on the planet known as an "American".  Be certain to prepare for a quiz over Chapters 6 and 7 in Kennedy and Chapter 4 in Newman.

Mon. Sept. 23 - Autumnal Equinox. Collected the 1993 DBQ.  Reviewed results from Thursday's quiz. Reviewed how to properly explain the significance of key vocabulary terms. Examined week three concepts. Worked on 13 colonies geography exercise. Assignment: Continue to build your knowledge of materials listed on Week 3 of the syllabus. Be prepared to do a quick write over key vocabulary.

Thurs. Sept. 19 - Brief open question session that addressed French authors,  Great Awakening, and Poor Richard's Almanac. Completed a quiz over week two materials. Reviewed SOAPS and PERSIA.  Examined sample thesis statements for the 1993 DBQ.  Added one sentence summaries to this survey. Assignment: Prepare week 3 of the syllabus.  Produce a handwritten essay that contains an excellent thesis and supporting evidence for the 1993 DBQ.

Wed. Sept. 18 - Worked on How to answer a DBQ. Covered the steps to breaking down a question.  Introduced SOAPS.  Assignment: Write one sentence summaries for documents 5, 6, and 7 from the 1993 DBQ. SOAPS documents 1-7.  Prepare for a quiz over the materials in Week two of the syllabus.

Mon. Sept. 16 - Open question period. Detailed discussion about settlement patterns, indentured servants, mercantilism, salutary neglect, fall line, medicine, barbers, metallurgy (blacksmithing). Examined carefully the Concept 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 questions. Assignment: Reevaluate your answers to the concept questions. It would be very wise to be certain that all aspects of each question is answered. Write a high quality thesis statement for the 1993 DBQ.  You should read carefully the first four documents of the 1993 DBQ and write a one sentence summary of the document.  Continue to study the materials required on week 2 of the syllabus.

Thurs. Sept. 12 - Open question period.  Briefly discussed Quick Write 2. Quiz over week one on the syllabus.  Assignment: Complete all reading for week 2 on the syllabus.  Complete Concepts 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3.

Wed. Sept. 11 - Quick Write on Concept 1.2. Reviewed how to analyze questions in order to score higher. Assignment: Prepare for a quiz over the materials in Week 1 of the class syllabus. 

Mon. Sept. 9 - Current Events, Quick write on Concept 1.1. Open question period. Assignment: Continue to study the readings for week 1 on the syllabus. Continue to work on Quizlet vocabulary for Unit 1.

Thurs. Sept. 5 - Visit from Mr. Saygers on registering at AP Central. School photos taken, read silently for ten minutes. Open discussion over readings. Gilder-Lehrman video clip on Pre-Columbian America.  PERSIA lesson. Quizlet Live. Examined depth of AP style questions. Reviewed a few APUSH resources listed on the class website. Concepts 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 small group work.  Assignment: Complete your registration at AP Central. Complete your work on Concepts 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. Complete all reading assignments for week one as listed on the syllabus.

Wed. Sept. 4 - Opening Day Procedures, text books reviewed, quizlet sign in. Chromebook procedures.  Assignment: Read carefully the syllabus.  It would be wise to begin week 1 on the syllabus to be ready for Monday's class.
